            Frequently Asked Questions

1.) Do I need to make an appointment or reservation to shoot?

No. All shooting is done first come first serve basis. However, if you are coming with a large group (8+ shooters) we recommend that you call ahead and let us know that you are coming.

2.) I have never shot before and would like some shotgun instruction. Is this available?

If you would like, a shooting instructor can be arranged if you call 24 hours ahead. Shooting instructors are available for $50.00 an hour (by appointment), and they will certainly get you starting off busting clays! To schedule a lesson, call the clubhouse.

3.) How old do you have to be to shoot? Are there age restrictions?

You must be supervised by an adult if you are under 18 years of age. An adult is considered someone who is 18 years of age or older. There is not a minimum age required, however all shooters are required to safely handle the firearm that they are using and know the range
rules. A hunter safety certificate is not needed to shoot at our range. Shooters who are 16 years and under shoot for reduced rates on the clay range and free on the rifle/pistol range.

4.) How can clayshooting help my hunting skills?

Sporting Clays has target presentations that simulate many shots that you might encounter in the field. You can even start low gun, just like in the field!

5.) What kind of hunting presentations are available on your sporting clays course?

Every sporting clays shooting station has four automatic clay target throwing machines. This allows your group to mix up what you can shoot. There are incoming, flushing, crossing and more different types of target presentations. Just remember, you can only load 2 shells at a time in your firearm.

6.) Can I shoot my game, bird, buck, and/or slug shot at clay targets?

Game, bird, slugs, and buck shot are not acceptable to shoot at clay targets at Island Lake and Bald Mountain Shooting Range. The only shotgun shells that are permitted are shot sizes 7.5 through 9 shot. So, leave your #6's and below at home!

7.) I am just looking for fun, what should I shoot?

If you are looking to just have fun, then Sporting Clays is what you need! With 4 traps at each of our 15 different shooting stations at Island Lake Shooting Range, and 4 traps at each station at each of our 14 stations at Bald Mountain Shooting Range, there is a level of challenge for everyone. Sporting Clays takes roughly 2 hours to shoot.

8.) Do you offer rifle and pistol instruction?

Yes, we offer rifle  and pistol instruction! You can call the club house at the range you are closest to and set up an appointment. We also offer sight-in clinics, beginner's courses, and  CPL classes at Island Lake Shooting Range! So, visit our website often, and check out the instruction tabs.

9.) I am not from Michigan. Can I still shoot?

Of course! We have had shooters from all over the United States as well as Canada and Europe. If you are a resident of Canada and need an invitation letter to cross the border with a firearm, please email us at msc@mishoot.com .
